In a city that records every debt, oath and death in a living archive, a damaged clerk discovers that names are being erased from the ledger before the people themselves vanish. To find out who is stealing them, he has to work with the one woman he once helped condemn. The deeper they go, the clearer it becomes that the archive is not keeping the city safe, it is feeding on it.
