In a London where unfinished novels can be filed away in municipal archives and quietly reissued as approved lives, a copy editor discovers that his own abandoned manuscript has started altering the people around him. As the changes spread, he has to decide whether to preserve the book, destroy it, or finish the version that was never meant to exist. The novel follows the uneasy business of authorship, revision and the cost of making a story behave.
