Behind the stories
Nicholas Blake writes mainly in mystery and enjoys discussing both the creative and practical sides of making books, from early drafts to finished editions.
A story does not need to explain everything to know what it means.

On the writing desk
First draft
When a small Bristol press prepares to launch a long-delayed local history book, the proof copy vanishes and the editor who handled it is found dead in the shop’s back room. Book formatter Daniel Vale, who would rather fix page breaks than people’s tempers, starts noticing that the clues are buried in the manuscript itself. What looks like a tidy publishing mishap turns into a knot of old grudges, altered pages and one very inconvenient truth.
