First draft
In 1912, a junior cataloguer at a private lending library in Bristol discovers that one of the books returned to the shelves contains a coded message hidden in the margins. As she traces the note through the city’s reading rooms, boarding houses and docks, she finds the message is tied to a disappearance everyone else has decided to forget. The deeper she looks, the more the library itself seems to be keeping the dangerous parts of the story in order.
