In a rain-soaked Irish market town in the 1890s, a widowed clerk begins copying parish accounts for a local solicitor and finds that one old ledger does not match the rest. As she follows the gaps through family grudges, missing payments and a death everyone has learned to explain away, she discovers the town has been balancing its own books for years.
