In a storm-battered coastal city where salt is used to bind spirits, Mara Quill inherits her dead mother's failing saltworks and discovers the family trade was built on stolen dead. When the buried wards begin to break, the city’s restless spirit-tide starts taking the living instead. Mara has to decide whether to keep the city safe by continuing the lie, or destroy the system that has protected it for generations.
