When a quiet municipal library in Portsmouth is due to be stripped of its old card catalogue, assistant librarian Nora Vale finds a hidden note tucked into the final drawer. Before she can make sense of it, a local history volunteer turns up dead in the closed stacks, and the library becomes the neatest place in town to hide a very ugly secret. Nora has to follow the trail through book donations, shelving records and long-buried grudges before the building is emptied and the evidence goes with it.
