First draft
After a storm exposes a sealed room beneath a collapsing terrace in Swansea, Mara Vale finds a ledger of names written by hand and crossed out in salt. Each name corresponds to someone who later vanished, and the house starts making room for the missing in small, domestic ways: footsteps in empty halls, wet footprints on clean floors, and voices trapped in the walls. As Mara digs into the building’s history, she realises the house is not haunted by the dead so much as by the unfinished business of being remembered.
