On the edge of a slowly flooding coastal town in Devon, a woman cataloguing abandoned household objects for a private archive begins to notice that some items seem to remember the lives of their owners. As the town prepares for managed retreat, she is drawn into a quiet, unsettling effort to preserve what can no longer be properly kept. The novel follows the ordinary business of sorting, listing and letting go, until those routines start to look like a form of magic.
