Matthew Lewis writes mainly in historical fiction and enjoys discussing both the creative and practical sides of making books, from early drafts to finished editions.
Writing gets interesting when the obvious choice stops working.

First draft
Set in Belfast in 1912, the novel follows a junior library clerk who discovers that a missing ledger may hold the names of men being quietly blacklisted for their politics and union activity. As the city edges toward crisis, he has to decide whether to protect the institution that raised him or expose the people using it to control others. The story moves through libraries, dockside streets and private reading rooms where information is treated like a weapon.
