On the writing desk
Later first draft
When a rain-damaged bookshop in Winchester opens a locked room no one remembers building, its new caretaker finds that certain books have been annotated by hands that do not belong to the living. The notes begin predicting the private failures of customers and staff, each one leading them a little closer to a sealed basement that should have stayed sealed. What starts as a nuisance becomes a slow, intimate haunting built out of guilt, old grief, and the terrible usefulness of being read too carefully.
