Behind the stories
Matthew Ainsworth writes across horror and gothic, with a particular interest in character, atmosphere, revision and the details that turn a manuscript into a finished book.
Writing gets interesting when the obvious choice stops working.

First draft
When a struggling cataloguer takes a temporary post in a decaying private library on the edge of Leeds, she finds that some of the books have been quietly altered, their contents changing after midnight. The library’s locked rooms, missing records and strange borrowing rules begin to suggest that the building is not preserving its collection so much as feeding on it. As the omissions spread into her own life, she has to decide what, exactly, the library is trying to keep hidden.
