In Portsmouth, old sea defences and forgotten alleyways hide a system of doors that only open at certain tides. When Mara Vale, a surveyor with a habit of noticing what other people miss, finds one of those doors marked with her dead brother’s name, she is pulled into a hidden dispute over who gets to control what comes through the city’s cracks. The deeper she goes, the more it becomes clear that the gate is not just a route into the uncanny, but a lock on something that should probably have stayed shut.
