On the writing desk
Later first draft
When a Belfast proofreader inherits her late father’s storage unit, she finds a stack of notebooks that describe incidents in a city apartment block with unnerving precision, including events that have not happened yet. As she starts checking the details, she realises someone in the building has been shaping the lives of the other tenants for years, and may already know she is looking. The deeper she goes, the harder it becomes to tell whether the notebooks are evidence, confession, or a very patient trap.
