When a failing coastal library in Plymouth begins receiving books that were never catalogued and cannot be traced to any donor, the night staff notice that the shelves are changing after closing time. Mara Venn, the archivist brought in to save the collection, finds that the building is preserving more than books: it is keeping old griefs, vanished names, and something that has learned to live in the gaps between records.
