When a quiet Durham lending library closes for refurbishment, archivist Nell Mercer finds a key tucked inside a returned book that should not exist. The key leads her into a tangle of old local secrets, awkward neighbours, and a missing ledger that someone has gone to considerable trouble to keep buried. Nell would rather catalogue history than disturb it, but some things in a small town refuse to stay shelved.
