When a village charity shop in a Norfolk market town begins selling donated teacups with puzzling handwritten numbers inside the saucers, local bookseller Maya Cohen notices the same numbers appear in old church records and missing household accounts. As a long-buried dispute over money, memory and who was quietly helping whom starts to surface, Nell has to untangle a very polite web of lies before the next person to be embarrassed becomes the next person to vanish.
