After her mother dies, Mara inherits a narrow terrace house on the Kent coast that seems to alter its own climate, keeping one room in winter, another in late summer, and the hall in a rain that never quite reaches the floor. As she tries to sort the place for sale, she finds the house has been storing fragments of other lives, and that her family’s silences may be part of its design.
