When a chain of sea-walls begins to fail along a wind-battered coast, a practical mapmaker is sent to trace an old road that only appears at low tide. The route leads through abandoned harbours, half-flooded sanctuaries and local bargains that were never properly broken. What starts as a survey becomes a race to stop the sea from taking more than land.
