First draft
In 1893 Oxford, a widowed copyist at a college library discovers that a set of routine account books has been altered to hide a long-ago disappearance. When she starts checking old inventories against surviving papers, she finds that the missing man was not simply forgotten, and that several respectable people have spent years keeping him that way. The deeper she goes, the more the city’s neat surfaces begin to look like a very old arrangement of lies.
