When a structural survey of a decaying Victorian house on the Kent coast uncovers a sealed room no plan shows, Mara Vale is hired to document the building before it is restored. The house begins to alter around her, not by magic exactly, but by the stubborn persistence of old grief, old lies, and the people who benefited from both. As the tide rises and the rooms shift, Mara has to decide whether the house is haunted by the dead or by the living who built their lives on what was buried there.
