In the winter of 1812, a disgraced coastal surveyor is sent north to trace a vanished supply route through the fens and salt marshes of East Anglia. He finds that the route was never merely a road for goods, but a hidden line of smuggling, debt and local loyalties that powerful men would rather bury than expose.
