In a coastal kingdom where old debts are sealed in salt and spoken bargains linger longer than the people who make them, a quiet archivist is sent to catalogue a ruin that should have stayed buried. She finds the orchard is still growing, the dead are not entirely dead, and the family that owns the land has been bargaining with something under the roots for generations.
