On the edge of a peat bog in the north, a woman inherits a house that has been sealed for generations and finds it still keeping the dead in order. When the old wards begin to fail, she has to decide whether the house is a prison, a refuge, or a bargain that was never fully paid for. The further she goes into its rooms, the less certain she becomes about which family secrets belong to the living.
