First draft
After a municipal library in Sheffield is marked for closure, Mara Ellison takes a temporary job helping to clear its archives and discovers a set of unreturned books annotated by the same hand over several decades. As she traces the notes back through former borrowers, staff records and half-forgotten neighbourhood histories, she begins to suspect the library has been holding together more than books. The work forces her to reckon with a family silence she has spent years arranging around rather than facing.
