In 1912, a young cataloguer at a provincial library in Newcastle discovers that a missing ledger may be the only record of a local family’s wartime correspondence and a disputed inheritance. As she follows the paper trail through reading rooms, tenements and respectable drawing rooms, she finds that the people guarding the truth are often less interested in history than in convenience.
