First draft
Set in Exeter in the late 19th century, the novel follows a widowed printer’s clerk who discovers that a long-closed account book from a defunct shipping firm contains evidence of a disappearance everyone in the city has quietly agreed to forget. As he traces the names and crossings recorded in its pages, he is drawn into the uneasy lives of dock workers, tradesmen and respectable families who prefer their past to remain unexamined. The book is as much about what people choose not to say as what they record.
