When a small-town lending library in Stirling begins receiving anonymous returns of rare local history books, cataloguer Mara Devlin assumes someone has finally developed a sense of civic duty. Then one of the books turns up with a page removed, a note hidden in the binding, and a former trustee found dead after asking awkward questions about the collection. Mara has to untangle a trail through book clubs, archive rooms and very polite lies before the missing page points to someone who would rather keep the past shelved.
