First draft
When a quiet archival librarian in Cheltenham discovers that a long-missing checkout card has been slipped into a decommissioned local library book, she starts tracing the last people to borrow a set of ordinary-looking novels. Each borrower seems to have vanished from their own life in a different way, and the pattern suggests someone has been using the library’s records to map out a private campaign of ruin. The deeper she digs, the less certain she becomes that she is investigating the past rather than being read by it.
