Later first draft
Set in 1847 during the worst year of the famine, the novel follows a Limerick cooper’s daughter who is sent to Cobh with a cart of salted provisions that may never reach the people who need them. Along the road, she is drawn into a web of landlords, smugglers and desperate families, where every kindness carries a price. The journey becomes less about delivery than about deciding what survival is worth when the law and conscience no longer agree.
