When a quiet Dublin librarian is put in charge of clearing out a closing branch, she finds a set of marginal notes in forgotten books that seem to map the private lives of the people who borrowed them. As the closure date approaches, she begins to suspect the notes were left by someone who understood the library as a record of what people could not say elsewhere. The novel follows her attempt to decide whether to preserve the evidence or protect the people it might expose.
