When a struggling Portsmouth bookshop starts receiving returned books that were never sold, the owner notices the same names appearing in the margins of each one. The notes point to missing people, old grief, and a presence that seems to know exactly what readers are willing to ignore. As the shop’s stock begins to change on its own, he has to find out what the books are trying to keep buried before the next return is his own.
