After a minor scandal at a small Oxford publishing house, Helen Mercer is reassigned to oversee the final copyedit of a difficult debut novel whose author insists on changing everything at the last minute. As Helen works through the manuscript, she begins to see how much of her own life has been edited into silence, from her stalled marriage to the compromises that have made her professionally reliable and personally unreadable.
