The Ledger of Small Mercies
Set in Coventry in the years after the First World War, the novel follows a widowed ledger clerk who is asked to help sort the records of a fading family engineering firm. As she uncovers missing accounts, half-told loyalties and the quiet cost of keeping people employed, she finds that the smallest omissions can change a whole life. The story is as much about work, memory and practical survival as it is about grief.
