When sixteen-year-old Mara Vale discovers that the old canal lanterns around her town are keeping something buried beneath the water asleep, she is dragged into a quiet, stubborn kind of magic that has been hidden in plain sight for generations. As the lanterns begin to fail one by one, Mara has to work out who benefits from the waking thing below, and why everyone in Hollowmere seems determined to pretend nothing is wrong.
