First draft
Set in Cambridge in the late 1940s, the novel follows a damaged assistant librarian who is sent to sort the private papers of a dead antiquarian bookseller. What begins as routine cataloguing turns into a slow unpicking of wartime absences, old debts and the stories people hide inside books. The book is interested in what survives when institutions tidy the past into something neat.
