Behind the stories
Imogen Holland writes across literary fiction and historical fiction, with a particular interest in character, atmosphere, revision and the details that turn a manuscript into a finished book.
Writing gets interesting when the obvious choice stops working.

First draft
In 1893, a widowed clerk in Inverness is asked to help sort the private papers of a dead shipping family, only to find that the records do not match the official story of their fortune. As she follows the gaps through warehouses, parlours and the riverfront, she begins to understand that the family’s silence has protected more than reputation. The novel traces how a respectable household is built from omission, and what it costs the people asked to keep it tidy.
