First draft
When a ruined orchard begins growing fruit made of glass instead of flesh, Mara Vale is sent to find the cause before the spring trade collapses. The work takes her into a valley where old bargains still shape the land, and into the company of a watchful magistrate who has reasons of his own for keeping the orchard intact. As the strange growth spreads, Mara has to decide whether restoring the old order is worth the people it will quietly ruin.
