Set in an Aberdeen fishing quarter in the 1890s, the novel follows a widowed bookkeeper who discovers that the accounts she keeps for a local curing house conceal more than missing money. As she traces the gap in the figures, she is drawn into a quiet network of family loyalties, unpaid debts and the cost of saying what everyone already knows but no one will write down.
