First draft
In late-Victorian Bristol, a widowed mapmaker’s daughter is asked to sort the papers left behind in a collapsing riverside house before the building is cleared. Among invoices, letters and half-finished plans, she uncovers a family arrangement that was built on silence and convenience rather than care. The work of sorting the dead’s paperwork becomes a way of testing what can still be repaired among the living.
