Early draft
In 1816, after a fire destroys part of a London counting house, a junior clerk discovers that the firm's books have been altered to hide a long-running fraud. He is forced to choose between protecting the family that employs him and exposing a truth that could ruin them all, while the city around him turns rumours into certainty. The story follows his attempt to trace the missing money through dockside warehouses, private correspondence and the brittle code of respectability.
