Behind the stories
Hazel Bishop writes across speculative fiction and literary fiction, with a particular interest in character, atmosphere, revision and the details that turn a manuscript into a finished book.
The best ideas rarely arrive in their final form.

First draft
In a rain-soured Liverpool, a woman who restores damaged books begins to notice that certain paperbacks are changing their text between one reading and the next. The altered passages seem to point towards a long-buried loss in her own life, and towards a local archive that should not, by any sensible rule, still be there. As she follows the shifting pages, the line between preservation and interference starts to look uncomfortably thin.
