When a small Portsmouth lending library prepares to close, its meticulous volunteer, Clara Venn, discovers that one of the library’s most borrowed books has been swapped for a handwritten copy containing a hidden message. Before she can work out who left it there, a local collector is found dead, and the quiet business of catalogues, donations and overdue slips turns distinctly less peaceful. Clara has to untangle a chain of old grievances buried in the library’s records before the wrong person is blamed for the murder.
