Set in post-war Liverpool, the novel follows a typesetter who inherits a failing family print shop and discovers that one altered line in a local memorial booklet has unsettled several lives. As she tries to trace who changed it, the work becomes less about the error itself than the silences people built around it. The story moves between the practical business of printing and the private damage ordinary people carry.
