Set in Newcastle in the late nineteenth century, this novel follows a meticulous compositor’s widow who starts tracing a series of small accounting errors at a riverside shipping office. The paper trail leads her into a quieter, more dangerous mystery than any public scandal, where ledgers, missing names and old loyalties all matter more than appearances.
