On the writing desk
Later first draft
When a long-serving librarian in Worcester is told her branch will be merged, she starts quietly re-cataloguing a set of donated books that seem to have been mislabelled for years. The work draws her into the lives of the people who borrowed them, and into her own habit of staying useful rather than being known. As the library changes around her, she has to decide what should be preserved, and what she has been shelving in herself.
