When a small public library in Lancaster is told its building will be sold, its quiet acquisitions assistant, Ellen Marsh, starts tracing the history of the books that were never returned. The search leads her through old borrowers, marginal notes, and the awkward economics of keeping a place for reading alive. As the deadline closes in, she has to decide whether preserving the library means saving the building, or letting go of the version everyone has been defending.
