Behind the stories
George Harris writes across historical fiction and mystery, with a particular interest in character, atmosphere, revision and the details that turn a manuscript into a finished book.
Writing gets interesting when the obvious choice stops working.

First draft
In late seventeenth-century Stirling, a parish clerk with a careful eye for ledgers and lies is drawn into the disappearance of a bell from the ruined abbey at Cambuskenneth. What begins as a question of theft turns into a search through old loyalties, local grief and a murder that was meant to stay buried. The story moves between household secrets, church politics and the practical business of surviving in a town that remembers everything.
