First draft
In post-war Leeds, a widow who has spent years keeping other people’s accounts is left with a ledger that should not exist, full of names, payments and small betrayals tied to a local mill family. As she follows the paper trail, she finds that the most ordinary records can expose the most damaging truths. The novel balances domestic detail, moral pressure and the slow cost of deciding what should be kept, and what should be burned.
