First draft
In post-war Canterbury, a widowed archivist is asked to sort the rescued papers of a long-closed parish library after fire and neglect have left the records in disarray. Among the damaged ledgers and half-burnt letters, she finds evidence of a family dispute that was quietly buried decades earlier, and the past begins to press on her own careful life. What starts as an act of preservation becomes a reckoning with loyalty, grief and the stories institutions choose to keep.
